Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars) is an anime about challenges of cooking as the title implies. This anime has gotten very popular in the few months it has been airing and it’s additionally been received pretty well. But is it any good or is it just another one of these popular but dull anime, that I shall discuss in this review.
Storyline – 8/10
You have to have understood that the anime revolves around Soma Yukihira who needs to eventually become a cook and surpass his father in cooking. Some stuff occurs and Soma ends up in Totsuki Academy, which is the top cooking school in Japan. After reading the synopsis, you need to have come to the final outcome it isn’t unique or particular, but that doesn’t make it bad. The story is not anything even special but the other facets of the show are so well done that it makes you believe that the storyline is better than it actually is.
Artwork and Animation – 9/10
The animation of the show, to be described in one word, is brilliant. While you can say that almost all anime which are released these days have really good animation, Shokugeki no Soma’s animation is a level above most others. Want to learn more about www.ShokugekiSoma.com? Visit this page. (while not being as great as something made by ufotable but it is still very comprehensive and smooth). The best thing about Food Wars’s art is the manner they display food, it’s really great. The artwork is consistent throughout the show and doesn’t get poor at any moment. The openings and finishing overly are animated nicely. The designs of the characters are, for the large part, unique as well, with the majority of characters having distinct layouts. Nonetheless, you can argue that Erina Nakiri(one of the female protagonists) looks pretty darn similar to Asuna Yuuki from SAO.
Characters – 9/10
The cast in this anime is really big, which you’d anticipate from a shounen anime like this. There are rivals, friends, upperclassmen, etc but they have gotten fairly good display time to express their characters.
Our lovely protagonist, Soma Yukihira is just truly wonderful. He can be OP occasionally with his dishes but he’s amazing, however. He is and isn’t your typical shounen protagonist. When I say he is your typical shounen protag, I look into the fact that he’s a target of surpassing someone, he is quite determined to do that, etc. while I say he isn’t, the unique features of his characters come out: his confidence, he is good at what he does, he’s arrogant. Now, here his arrogance does a fantastic job because it is genuinely interesting to view the competition’s reactions when they’re brought down by his words, and most of all, he entertains us. For an anime like Food Wars, he’s the perfect protagonist.
The two primary female characters of the show are bloody great: Megumi Tadokoro is your usual bungling, frightened girl from a little village who expects of making it big here. While there’s nothing much exceptional about her character as of yet, she’s done her job well so far and is getting development and she does get more courageous as the anime progresses. Erina Nakiri is the tsundere who is also called “God Tongue” due to her ability to just acknowledge the best of foods. She is the daughter of the Manager(or something big shot of Totsuki at least.) and her family is just one of the leads in culinary eateries and other stuff on the planet. She’s prideful, arrogant and also would destroy whatever could stand in her way of being no. 1 in Totsuki; anyone besides Soma. Erina despises Soma and you will know why she does after watching the first number of episodes. The interactions between Soma and Erina are interesting to see, actually interesting to see. Although the show hasn’t focused on Erina too much as of yet, but I ‘m confident she’ll be getting her time in this second half. The remaining characters, too, as I said, are amusing to watch. Some of their interactions are hilarious while some will reveal to you the intensity of the conflicts occurring in Food Wars.
1. Extremely entertaining. 2. Astonishing comedy and you’ll jump from the seat while watching some of them. 3. Great animation and soundtrack. 4. Immensely amusing character interactions.
Humor can get out of control occasionally with the ecchi. If you aren’t a devotee of ecchi, you mightn’t like the characters’ reactions after they eat the food. They get naked and play and act like they’re having orgasms. To understand www.ShokugekiSoma.com even better, visit this website. A lot of people have appreciated this but some might not. However, the great thing is the fact that these get less and less as the anime advances and by around episode 8, these foodgasms are reduced since the anime starts to get more serious and take off to the heavens.
Enjoyment: 10/10 This anime is a hell of a ride and the entertainment value of the show is right up there. The very first episode is nothing compared to what the next few episodes bring to you. The thing got better and better with each passing episode.
Overall – 9.5/10 In my opinion, Shokugeki no Soma is the best anime released in the year 2015. I reckon, the stats it’s on MAL speaks for itself. I’d definitely advise this anime to you, even if you’re not a fan of such anime, it is worth your time and I’m virtually sure that you simply won’t regret seeing it.
